Drone Logistics and Warehouse Operations: Inventory Management and Internal Transport

Drone Logistics and Warehouse Operations: Inventory Management and Internal Transport

Warehouses and logistics facilities are among the fastest-growing commercial drone markets. Drones address fundamental challenges in large-scale distribution centers: the cost and time required to conduct cycle counts, the difficulty of accessing high racking, and the speed needed for real-time inventory accuracy. This guide covers the main use cases and the technology behind them.

Inventory Scanning and Cycle Counting

Manual inventory counting in large warehouses is slow, expensive, and error-prone. Warehouse drones automate this process:

  • Barcode and QR scanning: Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and barcode reading software fly pre-programmed routes through rack aisles, scanning pallet and location labels at speeds impossible for manual teams
  • RFID scanning: Drones with RFID readers can inventory RFID-tagged products without line-of-sight scanning, dramatically increasing throughput
  • High-racking access: Drones safely access storage locations at 10–20m height that require forklifts or elevated work platforms for manual inspection
  • Night operations: Drones can conduct cycle counts during non-operational hours without disrupting picker activity during the day

Leading operators in this space include Gather AI, Corvus One, and Gather AI (US), and Eyesee (Europe). These companies operate purpose-built autonomous warehouse drones that navigate indoor GPS-denied environments using computer vision and LiDAR-based localization.

Indoor Navigation Without GPS

Warehouse drones face a unique technical challenge: GPS signals are unavailable indoors. Navigation relies on:

  • LiDAR SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping): The drone builds and maintains a map of the warehouse while localizing itself within it in real time
  • Visual odometry: Camera-based tracking of environmental features for position estimation
  • Fiducial markers: Some systems use AprilTag or similar visual markers placed at known positions throughout the facility to provide absolute position references
  • Pre-mapped environments: Most warehouse drone systems require an initial mapping flight before autonomous operations begin

Dock and Yard Management

Beyond the warehouse interior, drones provide aerial situational awareness for:

  • Trailer yard inventory — identifying which trailers are at which dock doors or yard positions
  • Inbound shipment documentation — photographing trailer contents before unloading for damage claims
  • Perimeter security monitoring around distribution center campuses

Last-Mile and Internal Transport

While external drone delivery (Wing, Amazon Prime Air) captures most media attention, internal transport drones within large facilities are an emerging application:

  • Transporting small, high-value items between processing stations within a facility
  • Delivering tools, parts, or documentation to specific pick locations
  • Hospital and healthcare facility internal transport (specimen delivery, pharmacy)

Internal transport drones must meet stringent safety requirements for operation near workers, including collision avoidance, speed limiting, and defined flight corridors.

Hardware Considerations

Warehouse drones are purpose-built for indoor autonomous operation and differ significantly from consumer or enterprise outdoor drones:

  • Smaller form factor for aisle navigation (typically 400–600mm diagonal)
  • Ducted or protected propellers to prevent contact injuries
  • Integrated LiDAR for navigation and obstacle avoidance
  • High-brightness lighting for scanning in variable warehouse lighting conditions
  • Docking stations for autonomous charging between missions

Consumer and enterprise outdoor drones (DJI Mavic, Matrice series) are not typically used for autonomous indoor warehouse operations due to GPS dependency and lack of the specialized scanning payloads required.
