Drone Camera Lens Replacement Guide
A scratched, cracked, or shattered camera lens directly impacts image quality. Even fine scratches cause glare, reduced contrast, and loss of detail in footage. This guide covers how to assess lens damage and replace the lens or lens frame on common drone models.
Assessing Lens Damage
Not all lens damage requires immediate replacement. Evaluate based on:
- Fine surface scratches — minor scratches in the anti-reflective coating cause visible glare in bright sunlight but may be acceptable for non-critical use
- Deep scratches through the glass — cause visible artifacts in footage and should be replaced
- Cracked glass — replace immediately. Crack edges create strong internal reflections and the crack will worsen with thermal cycling
- Shattered lens frame — replace the frame assembly regardless of the glass condition
To test the impact of a scratch, record a test video in bright conditions and review at full resolution. If you see flare streaks, haze, or dark lines in the footage, the lens needs replacement.
Lens vs Full Camera Module Replacement
On most consumer drones, the lens is bonded to the camera module and is not separately replaceable — the lens frame assembly (lens + housing) is replaced as a unit. Only replace the full camera module if the sensor itself is damaged (dead pixels, color shift, or no image at all).

Step-by-Step Lens Frame Replacement
Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery.
Step 2 — Remove the gimbal camera from the drone body if the lens frame is part of the gimbal camera assembly.
Step 3 — Photograph the lens frame and surrounding components before disassembly.
Step 4 — Remove the lens frame retaining screws. These are typically M1.2 or M1.4 screws. Use the correct screwdriver to avoid stripping.
Step 5 — Carefully detach the lens frame. The frame may be secured with adhesive in addition to screws. Use a plastic spudger to separate it without damaging the sensor below.
Step 6 — Clean the sensor surface with a blower (not compressed air directly on the sensor) to remove any dust before installing the new frame.
Step 7 — Install the new lens frame. Align carefully before tightening screws. The lens must be centered over the sensor.
Step 8 — Test image quality before full reassembly. Power on and review a test image in the app for sharpness, color accuracy, and no vignetting.
Preventing Lens Damage
- Always use the gimbal cover when transporting the drone
- Install a UV filter on models that support them — a sacrificial filter protects the main lens from scratches and impacts
- Clean the lens with a microfiber cloth and lens solution — never use paper or abrasive materials
- Store the drone in a case with the gimbal cover installed
