Drone Compass Calibration Guide After Motor or Arm Replacement
Any time you replace a brushless motor, arm, or structural component on your drone, a compass calibration is strongly recommended before the next flight. Metal components in motors and arm hinges can affect the compass sensor's magnetic field readings, causing GPS drift, heading errors, or return-to-home failures if the compass is not recalibrated.
Why Motor and Arm Replacements Affect the Compass
Brushless motors contain permanent magnets. When you install a new motor — even in the same position — the magnetic signature of the drone changes slightly. The compass sensor needs to re-learn the drone's magnetic baseline to provide accurate heading data.
For a technical explanation of compass calibration in UAV systems, see ArduPilot's compass calibration documentation.
When to Calibrate the Compass
- After replacing any brushless motor
- After replacing an arm or arm axis hinge
- After replacing the compass sensor cable or module
- After any crash that involved significant structural damage
- When flying in a new geographic location far from your home point
- When the app shows a "compass error" or "compass interference" warning
Where to Calibrate
Compass calibration must be done outdoors in an open area:
- At least 5 meters from vehicles, metal fences, and reinforced structures
- Away from power lines and electrical equipment
- Not on a rooftop with metal reinforcement
- Not inside a building or near large metal objects
The FAA UAS resources page also recommends pre-flight checks including compass verification before every flight in new locations.
Step-by-Step Compass Calibration
Step 1 — Go to an open outdoor area. Bring the drone and remote controller to a clear outdoor space away from interference sources.
Step 2 — Power on the drone and connect to the app.
Step 3 — Navigate to compass calibration. In the flight app, go to Settings → Safety → Sensors → Compass Calibration. Tap Calibrate.
Step 4 — Rotate the drone horizontally. Hold the drone level and rotate it 360° slowly in a horizontal circle. The app progress bar will advance as you rotate.
Step 5 — Rotate the drone vertically. Point the drone nose downward and rotate it 360° in a vertical circle.
Step 6 — Wait for confirmation. The app will show a success message. If it fails, move further from any metal objects and repeat.
Step 7 — Restart the drone. Power off and on again after calibration.
Step 8 — Verify GPS lock. After restart, wait for the drone to acquire a GPS lock (typically 10+ satellites) before arming for flight.
Troubleshooting Compass Calibration Failures
- Calibration fails repeatedly — Move to a different location. Metal underground (pipes, rebar) can cause interference even outdoors
- "Compass interference" warning during flight — Land immediately and recalibrate in a cleaner location
- Drone spins or circles after takeoff — This is a classic compass error symptom. Land, recalibrate, and check the compass sensor cable for damage
