Drone Thermal Camera Maintenance and Repair Guide
Thermal cameras are the most valuable — and most sensitive — component on enterprise drones like the Matrice 4T, EVO Max 4T, and Matrice 30T. Proper maintenance extends the life of the thermal sensor and ensures accurate temperature measurements. This guide covers cleaning, calibration, and repair of drone thermal camera systems.
How Drone Thermal Cameras Work
Drone thermal cameras use uncooled microbolometer sensors to detect infrared radiation and convert it to a temperature map. Unlike visible light cameras, thermal sensors are sensitive to contamination, temperature shock, and physical impact. They cannot be cleaned with the same methods as visible light camera lenses.

Thermal Lens Cleaning
The thermal lens is made of germanium or chalcogenide glass — materials that transmit infrared but are softer than standard optical glass. Use only:
- Dry, lint-free microfiber cloth for light dust
- Optical lens tissue moistened with lens cleaning solution for smudges
- Never use isopropyl alcohol on thermal lenses — it can damage IR coatings
- Never use compressed air directly on the sensor window — use a soft blower bulb
Non-Uniformity Correction (NUC) Calibration
Thermal cameras require periodic Non-Uniformity Correction to maintain temperature measurement accuracy. NUC compensates for variations in individual pixel sensitivity. Most drone thermal cameras perform NUC automatically — a brief "shutter click" you may notice during flight. If temperature readings seem inaccurate:
- Allow the camera to warm up for 5–10 minutes before critical measurements
- Trigger a manual NUC if the option is available in the app
- Ensure the lens cover is clean — contamination causes inaccurate NUC
Payload Housing Repair (Matrice 4T)
The payload housing protects the thermal and visible cameras from impact and weather. After a crash, inspect the housing for cracks before flying again.

Gimbal Motor Repair (Matrice 4T)
A failed gimbal motor causes thermal footage to be unstable or drift on one axis. Identify the failed axis and replace the corresponding motor:

Signal Cable Issues
A damaged gimbal signal cable causes video dropout or black screen from the thermal or visible camera channel:

When to Send to Authorized Service
The thermal sensor itself (the microbolometer) is not a field-replaceable component. If the thermal image shows permanent dead pixel clusters, fixed pattern noise that persists after NUC, or no thermal image at all, the payload must be sent to an authorized service center.
