FPV Drone VTX Power and Range Guide

The Video Transmitter (VTX) is the component that broadcasts your FPV camera feed to your goggles or monitor on the ground. Choosing the right VTX power level and frequency band directly affects your video range, image quality, and legal compliance. This guide covers everything you need to know before selecting or replacing a VTX.

VTX Frequency Bands

Most FPV VTXs operate on one of two frequency bands:

  • 5.8GHz — the most common FPV band. Short range (typically 500m–1km line of sight), good penetration through light obstacles, widely supported by goggles and monitors. Best for racing and proximity flying.
  • 1.2–1.3GHz / 1.7GHz — long range bands. Much greater range (several kilometers line of sight), better penetration through obstacles, but requires larger antennas and is subject to stricter licensing in many countries.
  • 4.9GHz — used in some specialized long-range systems. Less common but offers a middle ground between 5.8GHz and 1.3GHz.

VTX Power Levels

VTX power is measured in milliwatts (mW) or watts (W). Higher power = longer range, but also more heat, more battery drain, and stricter legal requirements:

  • 25mW — legal in most countries without a license. Short range (200–400m). Good for indoor flying and proximity racing.
  • 200mW — legal in many countries. Medium range (500m–1km). Good for outdoor freestyle.
  • 600mW–1W — requires licensing in most countries. Long range (1–2km). Used for long-range FPV cruising.
  • 1.6W–3W — high power, requires amateur radio license in most jurisdictions. Used for extreme long-range operations.

Antenna Selection

The antenna is as important as the VTX itself. A high-power VTX with a poor antenna will underperform a lower-power VTX with a quality antenna. For 5.8GHz FPV, a cloverleaf or pagoda antenna on the VTX paired with a directional patch antenna on the receiver gives the best range and penetration combination.

Legal Compliance Note

Operating a VTX above 25mW typically requires an amateur radio license (Technician class or equivalent) in most countries. High-power VTXs (1W+) may require additional permits.
