How to Calibrate Drone IMU After Repair
Replacing an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) module or performing any significant internal repair on your drone requires a fresh IMU calibration before the next flight. Skipping this step can result in unstable hover, attitude errors, or unexpected drift — even if the new part is functioning correctly.
This guide covers the IMU calibration process for the most common consumer and enterprise drone models.
What Is the IMU and Why Does It Need Calibration?
The IMU is a sensor cluster that measures acceleration, rotation, and orientation. It tells the flight controller which way is "up" and how the drone is moving. After a replacement, the new IMU needs to learn the drone's baseline orientation on a flat, level surface before it can provide accurate data in flight.
For more background on how IMUs work in UAV systems, see ArduPilot's accelerometer calibration documentation.
Before You Calibrate
- Ensure the repair is fully complete and all screws are tightened
- Install a fully charged battery
- Find a flat, level, vibration-free surface indoors
- Keep the drone away from metal objects and magnetic interference
- Update firmware to the latest version before calibrating
IMU Calibration — Consumer Drones (Mavic 3, Air 3, Mini 4 Pro)
Step 1 — Power on the drone and connect to the app. Open the manufacturer's flight app and connect to the drone via Wi-Fi or the remote controller.
Step 2 — Navigate to IMU calibration. Go to Settings → Safety → IMU Calibration (exact path varies by app version). Tap Calibrate.
Step 3 — Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will prompt you to place the drone in several orientations (flat, on its side, upside down). Follow each step carefully and hold each position until the progress bar completes.
Step 4 — Wait for confirmation. The app will display a success message when calibration is complete. If it fails, repeat the process on a flatter surface away from interference.
Step 5 — Restart the drone. Power off and on again after calibration before flying.
IMU Calibration — Enterprise Drones (Matrice 300 RTK, Matrice 350 RTK, Matrice 4T)
Enterprise drones use the DJI Pilot 2 app for calibration. The process is similar but includes additional steps:
Step 1 — Open DJI Pilot 2 and connect to the aircraft.
Step 2 — Go to Settings → Aircraft → IMU and tap IMU Calibration.
Step 3 — Follow the multi-orientation calibration sequence. Enterprise drones typically require 6 orientations.
Step 4 — After IMU calibration, also perform a compass calibration in an open outdoor area away from metal structures.
For enterprise operations, refer to the official DJI Support documentation for your specific aircraft model.
IMU Calibration — Autel Drones (EVO Max 4T, EVO II Pro, EVO Lite)
Use the Autel Sky app:
Step 1 — Connect to the drone via the Autel Sky app.
Step 2 — Go to Settings → Aircraft Status → IMU Calibration.
Step 3 — Follow the orientation sequence as prompted.
Step 4 — Restart the drone and perform a compass calibration outdoors before flying.
For Autel-specific calibration guidance, see the Autel Robotics Support Center.
Troubleshooting Failed IMU Calibration
- Calibration keeps failing — Move to a different location. Magnetic interference from metal floors, reinforced concrete, or nearby electronics can disrupt calibration
- IMU error persists after calibration — The IMU module itself may be faulty. Check connections and consider replacing the module
- Drone drifts after calibration — Also perform a compass calibration outdoors. IMU and compass work together for stable flight
