How to Repair a Drone After a Water Crash

A drone that crashes into water can often be saved if you act quickly. The key is to cut power immediately, dry the electronics before corrosion sets in, and systematically inspect each component before powering on again. This guide covers the complete recovery process.

Immediate Steps — First 10 Minutes

Step 1 — Retrieve the drone as quickly as possible. Every second submerged increases the chance of corrosion damage.

Step 2 — Do not power on. If the drone is still powered when retrieved, power off immediately by holding the power button. Do not attempt to fly it out of the water.

Step 3 — Remove the battery immediately. This is the single most important step. Cutting power prevents ongoing electrolytic corrosion of circuit board traces.

Step 4 — Remove the SD card and any payload. These can be dried separately.

Step 5 — Shake out excess water. Hold the drone with openings facing down and shake gently to drain water from the body.

Drying Process

Step 1 — Open the drone immediately. Remove the shell to expose internal components to air. The faster the electronics dry, the less corrosion will form.

Step 2 — Rinse with 99% isopropyl alcohol. IPA displaces water from circuit boards and evaporates quickly without leaving conductive residue. Use a soft brush to work IPA into connectors and between components. This is one of the most effective emergency treatments for water-damaged electronics.

Step 3 — Dry with warm air. Use a hair dryer on low heat or place the open drone near a warm air source. Do not use high heat — it can damage components and warp plastic.

Step 4 — Use desiccant. Place the open drone in a sealed bag or container with silica gel desiccant packets for 24–48 hours. This draws out remaining moisture from hard-to-reach areas.

Do NOT use rice. Rice is an ineffective desiccant for electronics and can introduce starch dust into connectors. Use proper silica gel.

Inspection After Drying

After 48 hours of drying, inspect all circuit boards before powering on:

  • Green or white powdery residue — this is corrosion. Clean with IPA and a soft brush. If corrosion has penetrated traces, the board needs replacement.
  • Black burn marks — indicate a short circuit occurred while powered. The affected board is likely damaged beyond repair.
  • Swollen battery — a battery that was submerged while charging or discharging may be swollen. Do not reuse it. Dispose of it safely.
  • Connector corrosion — green oxidation on gold connector pins. Clean with IPA and a fine brush. Severely corroded connectors should be replaced.

Power-On Test and Component Replacement

After inspection and cleaning, power on with caution:

  • Use a current-limited power supply if available — this limits damage if a short remains
  • Watch for smoke, burning smell, or unusual heat from any component
  • Check the app for error codes on each system
