How to Replace a Drone ESC: Step-by-Step Guide
The Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) converts the flight controller's signals into precise power delivery to each brushless motor. A failed ESC causes one motor to stop responding, resulting in a tilted hover, motor error codes, or a crash. This guide covers how to diagnose an ESC failure and replace it correctly.
ESC vs Motor Failure — How to Tell the Difference
Both a failed ESC and a failed motor produce similar symptoms: one motor not spinning or spinning erratically. To distinguish between them:
- Swap the motor cable to a known-good ESC channel. If the motor works on another channel, the ESC is the problem. If the motor still fails, the motor itself needs replacement.
- Check the flight log for ESC overcurrent or temperature warnings — these point to an ESC fault. See our guide on reading drone flight logs for details.
- Listen for the ESC startup beep sequence on power-on. A missing or abnormal beep from one ESC indicates a fault.
Types of ESC Configurations
Drones use two main ESC configurations:
- Individual ESCs — one ESC per motor, mounted in or near each arm. Common in FPV builds and some enterprise drones. Replace only the failed unit.
- 4-in-1 ESC board — all four ESCs on a single board, common in consumer drones (Mavic 4 Pro, Air series). The entire board must be replaced if any channel fails.

Tools You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver (PH000)
- Soldering iron and solder (for individual ESC replacement)
- Flux and desoldering wick
- Plastic pry tool
- Tweezers
- Anti-static mat or wrist strap
- Multimeter (for continuity testing)
Step-by-Step ESC Replacement
Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery. Wait 60 seconds for capacitors to discharge before opening the drone.
Step 2 — Open the drone body. Remove the shell screws and carefully separate the body panels.
Step 3 — Locate the failed ESC. For 4-in-1 boards, the entire board is the ESC. For individual ESCs, identify the unit connected to the failed motor arm.
Step 4 — Photograph all connections. Before disconnecting anything, photograph the cable routing and connector positions. This is critical for correct reassembly.
Step 5 — Disconnect the motor phase cables. The ESC connects to the motor via three phase wires. Disconnect or desolder these carefully.
Step 6 — Disconnect the power and signal cables. Disconnect the battery power input and the signal cable from the flight controller.
Step 7 — Remove the ESC. Unscrew the mounting screws and lift the ESC out. For soldered connections, use a soldering iron and desoldering wick to remove solder joints cleanly.
Step 8 — Install the new ESC. Mount the new ESC in position. For soldered connections, apply fresh solder to all joints. Ensure clean, shiny solder joints — cold joints cause intermittent failures.
Step 9 — Reconnect all cables. Reconnect the motor phase cables, power input, and signal cable. Refer to your photographs from Step 4.
Step 10 — Motor direction check. After reassembly, run a motor test in the app. If a motor spins in the wrong direction, swap any two of the three phase wires to reverse it.
Step 11 — Reassemble and test. Reattach the shell. Power on and run motor diagnostics before flying.
Soldering Tips for ESC Replacement
- Use 63/37 tin-lead solder or high-quality lead-free solder for reliable joints
- Apply flux before soldering for clean, strong joints
- Keep the iron tip clean and tinned
- Do not overheat the ESC pads — excessive heat damages the PCB
