The Matrice 4T is a high-performance enterprise drone used in thermal inspection, public safety, and industrial operations. Its 3-axis gimbal relies on three precision brushless motors — Yaw (Y-axis), Pitch (P-axis), and Roll (R-axis) — to deliver stable, accurate footage. When one of these motors fails, the gimbal will drift, shake, or stop responding entirely.

Symptoms of a Failed Gimbal Motor

Identifying Which Motor Has Failed

Each motor controls a specific axis of movement:

  • Yaw (Y-axis) — controls left/right pan rotation
  • Pitch (P-axis) — controls up/down tilt
  • Roll (R-axis) — controls horizon leveling

Power on the drone and observe which axis is unstable or unresponsive. This tells you which motor to replace.

Step-by-Step Motor Replacement

Step 1 — Power off completely
Remove the battery and wait 30 seconds before opening any components. Enterprise drones retain capacitor charge briefly after shutdown.

Step 2 — Remove the payload camera assembly
Detach the gimbal payload from the drone body by releasing the payload locking mechanism. Place it on a clean, padded surface.

Step 3 — Open the gimbal housing
Remove the front faceplate and rear enclosure cover by unscrewing the retaining screws. Keep all screws organized — they are different sizes.

Step 4 — Disconnect the motor signal cable
Each motor has a dedicated signal flex ribbon cable. Carefully lift the ZIF connector tab and slide the cable out. Note the cable routing before removal.

Step 5 — Remove the failed motor
Unscrew the motor mounting screws (typically 3–4 per motor). Gently lift the motor out of its bracket. Do not force it — if it resists, check for hidden screws or adhesive.

Step 6 — Install the replacement motor
Seat the new motor into the bracket and secure the mounting screws. Do not overtighten — these are precision components with soft alloy threads.

Step 7 — Reconnect the signal cable
Slide the signal flex cable into the ZIF connector and lock the tab. Ensure the cable is routed without kinks along the original path.

Step 8 — Reassemble and calibrate
Reattach the housing covers and payload assembly. Power on and run gimbal auto-calibration from the app before flying.

  • Use a gimbal motor diagnostic test board to verify the new motor is functioning before full reassembly
  • If the motor signal cable was damaged during removal, replace it at the same time
  • Always run a gimbal calibration after any motor replacement
