DJI Mavic 4 Pro vs Mavic 3 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

DJI Mavic 4 Pro vs Mavic 3 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

The Mavic 4 Pro is DJI's current flagship folding drone, while the Mavic 3 Pro remains a strong performer with a proven track record. If you are deciding between buying new or repairing your existing Mavic 3 Pro, this comparison gives you the data to make an informed decision.

Camera System

Both drones feature a triple-camera system, but the Mavic 4 Pro makes meaningful improvements:

  • Mavic 3 Pro: 4/3-inch CMOS (wide) + 1/1.12-inch (medium tele, 70mm equiv.) + 1/2-inch (tele, 166mm equiv.)
  • Mavic 4 Pro: 4/3-inch CMOS (wide) + 1/1.3-inch (medium tele, 70mm equiv.) + 1/1.5-inch (tele, 168mm equiv.)

The Mavic 4 Pro's medium and tele cameras use significantly larger sensors, improving low-light performance and dynamic range across all three cameras. The wide camera on both models uses the same 4/3-inch sensor.

The Mavic 4 Pro also adds 6K video recording on the wide camera and 4K/120fps slow motion, compared to 4K/60fps on the Mavic 3 Pro.

Gimbal and Stabilization

The Mavic 4 Pro introduces a 4-axis stabilization system on the main camera, adding a fourth stabilization axis that DJI calls the "Infinity Gimbal." This significantly improves stability in high-wind conditions and when performing rapid directional changes.

The Mavic 3 Pro uses a standard 3-axis gimbal — still excellent, but the Mavic 4 Pro's system is a generation ahead for demanding video work.

Obstacle Avoidance

Both drones feature omnidirectional obstacle avoidance. The Mavic 4 Pro uses an upgraded sensor array with improved low-light obstacle detection — useful for dawn/dusk operations.

Flight Time and Transmission

  • Mavic 3 Pro: Up to 43 minutes flight time. O3+ transmission up to 15 km
  • Mavic 4 Pro: Up to 51 minutes flight time. O4 transmission up to 41 km

The Mavic 4 Pro's O4 transmission system is a major generational leap — significantly better video feed quality and range, including improved penetration through urban RF interference.

Repair Cost Consideration

If you own a Mavic 3 Pro that has suffered crash damage, compare the repair cost against the upgrade cost before deciding:

For most single-component damage scenarios, repairing the Mavic 3 Pro is significantly cheaper than upgrading to the Mavic 4 Pro. See our full Repair vs Replace Cost Guide.

Verdict

  • Buy the Mavic 4 Pro if you need 6K video, 4K/120fps slow motion, the 4-axis gimbal, or the extended O4 transmission range for professional work
  • Repair your Mavic 3 Pro if the damage is limited to structural or gimbal components — the camera quality gap does not justify the upgrade cost for most users
  • Buy a used Mavic 3 Pro if budget is constrained and you want a triple-camera drone at a reduced price point
