The arm axis hinge is the folding joint that connects each propeller arm to the drone body. It is the most commonly damaged structural component in a crash because it absorbs the initial impact force. Fortunately, it is also one of the most straightforward repairs. This guide covers how to identify the correct part and replace it correctly.

Diagnosing Arm Axis Damage

  • Arm wobbles or has play when held and moved — the hinge bearing has failed
  • Arm does not click into flight position — the locking mechanism is broken
  • Visible crack in the hinge housing — structural failure, replace immediately
  • Motor tilted at an angle when the arm is fully extended — the hinge is bent
  • Drone tilts on takeoff despite balanced propellers — a bent arm is affecting motor thrust angle

Identifying the Correct Part

Arm hinges are position-specific (front left, front right, rear left, rear right) and model-specific. Always identify both before ordering.

To identify which arm position is damaged, orient the drone with the camera facing forward:

  • Front Left (FL) — left arm when viewed from behind the drone, closer to the camera
  • Front Right (FR) — right arm when viewed from behind, closer to the camera
  • Rear Left (RL) — left arm when viewed from behind, further from the camera
  • Rear Right (RR) — right arm when viewed from behind, further from the camera

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery.

Step 2 — Remove the propeller from the damaged arm.

Step 3 — Open the arm panel. On most folding drones, the arm hinge is accessed by removing 2–4 screws from the arm body near the hinge joint.

Step 4 — Disconnect the motor cable. The motor phase cable runs through the arm to the ESC. Carefully disconnect it at the connector inside the body.

Step 5 — Remove the damaged hinge. Unscrew the hinge mounting screws and slide the arm out of the body.

Step 6 — Install the new hinge. Insert the new arm assembly, route the motor cable, and tighten all mounting screws.

Step 7 — Reconnect the motor cable. Ensure the connector is fully seated.

Step 8 — Reassemble and test. Install the propeller and run a motor test in the app. Check that the arm clicks firmly into flight position and that the motor runs smoothly.
