Drone BVLOS Operations Explained: Beyond Visual Line of Sight Rules

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations — flying a drone beyond the pilot's unaided visual range — represent the frontier of commercial drone use. Drone delivery, long-range inspection, and infrastructure monitoring all depend on BVLOS capability. This guide explains what BVLOS means, how authorization works globally, and what it means for drone reliability and maintenance.

What Is BVLOS?

In standard operations, drone pilots must maintain direct unaided visual contact with their aircraft at all times. BVLOS means flying beyond that visual range — relying on sensors, cameras, detect-and-avoid systems, and coordination with air traffic management to maintain safety without direct visual observation.

BVLOS enables:

  • Drone delivery over urban and suburban areas (Amazon, Wing, Zipline)
  • Long-range pipeline and powerline inspection
  • Wildfire monitoring and mapping
  • Search and rescue over large areas
  • Agricultural monitoring of large properties

BVLOS Authorization by Country

United States (FAA): BVLOS requires a Part 107 waiver. The FAA has historically been conservative in granting BVLOS waivers, but has accelerated approvals for commercial delivery operators. An Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) framework is under development to create a more systematic BVLOS pathway. See the FAA BVLOS page for current guidance.

European Union (EASA): BVLOS falls in the Specific Category, requiring an Operational Authorization (OA) or compliance with a Standard Scenario (STS). The U-Space framework (digital airspace management) is being rolled out across the EU to enable scalable BVLOS operations.

Japan: Level 3 (BVLOS over unpopulated) and Level 4 (BVLOS over populated areas) are both authorized under Japan's 2022 framework — the most permissive BVLOS regime of any major economy. Japan leads the world in commercial BVLOS operations.

Australia (CASA): BVLOS requires an ReOC with BVLOS-specific conditions plus a SFOC (Special Flight Operations Certificate) or an approved operational concept. CASA has approved several commercial BVLOS operations for delivery and inspection.

Canada (Transport Canada): BVLOS requires an SFOC. Transport Canada has approved a growing number of BVLOS operations for agriculture, inspection, and delivery.

India (DGCA): A BVLOS policy framework is in place, with approvals granted on a case-by-case basis through the Digital Sky platform. India is actively expanding its BVLOS authorization program.

Reliability Requirements for BVLOS Drones

BVLOS operations impose much higher reliability requirements on drone hardware than standard VLOS operations. When a drone is beyond visual range, any component failure has a higher probability of causing a lost aircraft or uncontrolled landing. Key reliability considerations:

  • Preventive maintenance is mandatory — all critical components must be inspected and replaced on schedule, not on failure. See our Enterprise Drone Maintenance Schedule.
  • Propeller replacement — should be done on a defined flight-hour schedule, not when damage is visible
  • Motor bearing inspection — worn bearings are a leading cause of in-flight motor failures
  • GPS and compass reliability — BVLOS drones must have redundant positioning systems. Always verify GPS module health before BVLOS operations. See our GPS Module Replacement Guide.
  • Cooling system maintenance — extended BVLOS missions in warm conditions place high thermal loads on the aircraft. See our Cooling Fan Replacement Guide.

The Role of Detect-and-Avoid

BVLOS safety depends on the drone's ability to detect and avoid other aircraft without pilot visual observation. Current enterprise drones like the Matrice 350 RTK support ADS-B receivers and remote detection systems for detect-and-avoid capability. This is an active area of regulatory and technical development globally.
