Drone GPS Module Replacement Guide
The GPS/GNSS module provides position data that enables GPS-assisted hover, return-to-home, and autonomous flight modes. A failing GPS module causes weak signal, slow satellite acquisition, persistent GPS errors, or loss of positioning entirely. This guide covers how to diagnose a GPS failure and replace the module correctly.
Symptoms of a Failing GPS Module
- Slow GPS lock (taking more than 3–5 minutes to acquire signal in open sky)
- Low satellite count (below 8–10 in open sky)
- "Weak GPS Signal" or "GPS Error" warning in the app
- Drone drifts in GPS mode despite no wind
- Return-to-home accuracy poor or fails to engage
- GPS performance degraded after a crash (physical damage to module or cable)
GPS vs Compass — Isolating the Issue
GPS and compass errors produce similar symptoms (drift, poor positioning). Before replacing the GPS module, rule out a compass issue:
- Perform a fresh compass calibration in an open outdoor area. See our compass calibration guide.
- If calibration fails or the error persists after calibration, the GPS module or its cable is likely the issue.
- Check the GPS flex cable connector for looseness or corrosion before ordering a replacement module.

GPS Module Replacement by Model
Mavic 4 Pro:
Mavic 3 Series:
Step-by-Step GPS Module Replacement
Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery.
Step 2 — Open the top shell. The GPS module is typically located in the top center of the drone body, under the top shell panel.
Step 3 — Photograph cable routing before disconnecting anything.
Step 4 — Disconnect the GPS cable. The GPS module connects via a small coaxial antenna cable and a flex data cable. Disconnect both carefully.
Step 5 — Remove the module. Unscrew the mounting screws and lift the module out.
Step 6 — Install the new module. Seat the new module and reconnect both cables. Ensure the coaxial antenna cable clicks securely into the connector.
Step 7 — Reassemble and test. Power on in an open outdoor area and verify GPS lock within 60 seconds with 10+ satellites before considering the repair complete.
Post-Replacement Calibration
After replacing the GPS module, always perform:
- Compass calibration outdoors — the GPS and compass are often in the same module assembly
- IMU calibration — see our IMU calibration guide
- A full GPS lock test in open sky before flying
