Drone Pre-Flight Checklist for Repair Technicians
After completing a drone repair, a thorough pre-flight check is essential before returning the aircraft to service. Skipping this step risks a crash on the first post-repair flight — potentially causing further damage or injury. This checklist covers every system that should be verified after a repair.
For regulatory context, the FAA's UAS pre-flight guidance and EASA's drone regulations both require operators to verify airworthiness before each flight.
1. Physical Inspection
- All screws tightened — check motor mounts, arm hinges, shell screws
- No loose cables or connectors inside the body
- Propellers securely attached and undamaged
- Gimbal protector removed before flight
- Camera lens clean and undamaged
- No visible cracks in the frame or arms
2. Power System Check
- Battery fully charged and seated correctly
- Battery contacts clean and undamaged
- No swelling or deformation on the battery
- Power on without error codes
- All motors spin smoothly in motor test (no grinding or clicking)
- Motor rotation direction correct (CW/CCW as per aircraft layout)
3. Sensor Calibration Verification

- No IMU or compass error warnings in the app
- GPS lock acquired (10+ satellites recommended)
- Vision sensors active and error-free in all directions
4. Gimbal and Camera Check
- Gimbal initializes correctly on power-on
- Gimbal moves smoothly on all three axes (Y/P/R)
- No "gimbal motor overloaded" error
- Camera feed active and clear in the app
- No dark spots, blur, or artifacts in the image
- Video recording starts and stops correctly
5. Communication and Control Check
- Remote controller linked and signal strong
- All control inputs respond correctly (roll, pitch, yaw, throttle)
- Return-to-home function set and tested
- Failsafe behavior configured (RTH on signal loss)
- Flight app updated to latest version
- Firmware updated to latest stable version
6. Low-Altitude Hover Test
Before any mission, perform a 2–3 minute hover test at 1–2 meters altitude:
- Drone holds position without drifting
- No unusual vibration or noise
- Altitude hold stable
- All control inputs responsive
- No error codes appear during hover
If any issue appears during the hover test, land immediately and diagnose before flying higher or further.
7. Post-Repair Documentation
For professional repair technicians, document the repair and pre-flight check results:
- Parts replaced (with SKU/serial numbers)
- Calibrations performed
- Pre-flight check results
- Technician name and date
