How to Update Drone Firmware Before and After Repair

Firmware updates improve drone performance, fix bugs, and sometimes resolve error codes that appear after a repair. However, updating at the wrong time in a repair process can complicate troubleshooting. This guide covers when to update firmware and how to do it correctly for DJI and Autel drones.

When to Update Firmware

Update BEFORE repair if:

• The error you are repairing might be software-related (e.g., gimbal error that appeared after a previous firmware update)
• You want to confirm the issue persists on the latest firmware before ordering parts
• The drone is on very old firmware and compatibility with the flight app is causing issues

Update AFTER repair if:

• You replaced a component that requires firmware initialization (some modules require a firmware refresh to be recognized)
• The repair involved the main board or flight controller
• You want to test the repair on a clean, known-good firmware version

Do NOT update firmware if:

• The drone is mid-repair with components disconnected
• You are troubleshooting and need to isolate whether the issue is hardware or software
• A known firmware update introduced a bug affecting your repair scenario (check the DJI or Autel forums first)

DJI Firmware Update Procedure

Method 1 — Via DJI Fly / DJI Pilot 2 app (recommended):

1. Ensure the remote controller and drone are both powered on and connected
2. Open the app — if a firmware update is available, a notification will appear
3. Tap Update and wait for the download and installation to complete (do not power off during update)
4. The drone will restart automatically after the update
5. Verify the update in Settings → About

Method 2 — Via DJI Assistant 2 (for enterprise drones or advanced updates):

1. Download DJI Assistant 2 from the DJI website
2. Connect the drone to your computer via USB
3. Open DJI Assistant 2 and select your aircraft
4. Navigate to Firmware Update and select the version to install
5. Wait for the update to complete and restart

Autel Firmware Update Procedure

1. Open the Autel Sky app and connect to the drone
2. Go to Settings → About → Firmware Update
3. Tap Update and wait for installation
4. For manual updates, download firmware from the Autel Robotics Support Center and install via USB using Autel Explorer software

Firmware Rollback Risks

DJI firmware generally cannot be rolled back to older versions via the app — once updated, you are on the new version. If a firmware update caused a regression, monitor DJI's official channels and community forums for a fix. The DJI Forum is the primary community resource for firmware issue tracking and workarounds.
