Germany Drone Regulations 2026: Flying Drones in Deutschland
Germany follows the EASA Open/Specific/Certified framework but has additional national restrictions that operators must know. The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) is the national aviation authority responsible for drone registration and operator oversight. This guide covers the key rules for flying drones in Germany.
Registration Requirements
All drone operators in Germany must register with the LBA if they operate a drone that has a camera or weighs 250g or more. Registration is done through the DIPul platform (Digitale Plattform Unbemannte Luftfahrt). The operator ID must be displayed on the drone.
Open Category Subcategories
- A1 (C0/C1, under 900g): Fly near uninvolved people. Requires online A1/A3 theory test. DJI Mini-series drones (under 250g) qualify as C0 with maximum flexibility.
- A2 (C2, up to 4kg): Minimum 30m from uninvolved people (5m in low-speed mode). Requires A2 Certificate of Competency from LBA.
- A3 (C3/C4/legacy, up to 25kg): Minimum 150m from residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational areas.
Germany-Specific Restrictions
- Controlled airspace (CTR): Required authorization through DIPul near airports. Major cities (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg) have extensive CTR airspace.
- Nature reserves (Naturschutzgebiete): Drone operations prohibited without explicit permit from the responsible authority. Germany has extensive protected areas.
- Federal highways and railways: Flights within 100m of Autobahn and rail lines are restricted.
- Crowds and events: Flights over events with more than 1,000 people require Specific Category authorization.
- Night flight: Restricted in Open Category. Requires specific authorization.
DIPul Platform
Germany's DIPul is one of Europe's most advanced national drone management platforms. Operators use it to register, check airspace restrictions on an interactive map, apply for authorizations near airports, and file flight notifications. Access at dipul.de.
Berlin Special Restrictions
Berlin has particularly complex airspace due to the density of sensitive government buildings and historical airspace structures. Multiple permanent restricted zones cover government districts. Always check DIPul carefully before flying anywhere near central Berlin.
Penalties
Violations can result in fines up to β¬50,000. Serious violations endangering aircraft or people can result in criminal prosecution. German authorities actively enforce drone regulations, particularly around airports and restricted zones.
For current rules, see the LBA drone information page.
