Air 3 Gimbal Roll Motor Replacement Tutorial

The Air 3 features a 3-axis gimbal with a wide-angle and medium telephoto dual camera system. The Roll (R-axis) motor is responsible for keeping the horizon level during flight. When it fails, you'll notice a persistent tilt in your footage that gimbal calibration cannot correct. This tutorial covers how to diagnose and replace the roll motor on the Air 3.

Symptoms of a Failed Roll Motor

  • Footage consistently tilted to one side
  • Horizon not level even after gimbal calibration
  • Gimbal visibly drooping on the roll axis
  • "Gimbal motor overloaded" error specifically on the roll axis
  • Gimbal shakes or vibrates horizontally during flight

Tools You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver (PH000)
  • Plastic pry tool or spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Replacement gimbal roll motor compatible with Air 3 (SKU: SKU00012)
  • Clean, well-lit workspace

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery
Power off the drone completely and remove the battery. Never work on a live drone.

Step 2 — Remove the gimbal protector
Slide off the rubber gimbal guard. Inspect the gimbal visually for any obvious physical damage before proceeding.

Step 3 — Remove the front shell
Use a plastic pry tool to carefully separate the front shell. There are typically 4 screws on the underside. Keep all screws in a tray — they are small and easy to lose.

Step 4 — Access the roll motor
The roll motor is located on the outermost axis of the gimbal assembly, connecting the camera module to the gimbal arm. It is the smallest of the three gimbal motors.

Step 5 — Disconnect the motor signal cable
The roll motor has a dedicated flex ribbon signal cable. Lift the ZIF connector tab and slide the cable out carefully. Note the routing path.

Step 6 — Remove the roll motor
Unscrew the 2–3 mounting screws securing the roll motor. Gently lift the motor out. If it feels stuck, check for a small retaining clip or additional adhesive.

Step 7 — Install the new roll motor
Place the new roll motor into position. Align the mounting holes and secure with the screws. Do not overtighten.

Step 8 — Reconnect the signal cable
Route the flex cable along the original path and insert into the ZIF connector. Lock the tab firmly.

Step 9 — Reassemble and test
Reattach the front shell and all screws. Reinstall the battery, power on, and run gimbal auto-calibration. Check that the horizon is level in the camera feed before flying.

Tips for Success

  • If the roll motor cable was damaged during removal, replace it at the same time to avoid a repeat repair
  • After reassembly, do a slow hover test indoors to confirm the horizon stays level
  • If the gimbal still tilts after motor replacement, check the lens frame for physical damage that may be causing mechanical interference
