DJI Mini 4 Pro vs Mini 3 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

DJI Mini 4 Pro vs Mini 3 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

Both the Mini 4 Pro and Mini 3 Pro sit in DJI's sub-249g category, meaning they qualify for lighter regulatory requirements in many countries. But they are meaningfully different drones. This guide breaks down the key differences to help you decide which one is right for you — or which one is worth repairing if you already own one.

Camera and Image Quality

Both drones use a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, capable of shooting 4K/60fps video and 48MP stills. The core camera hardware is nearly identical.

The key difference is in video options: the Mini 4 Pro adds 4K/100fps slow motion and vertical shooting mode (for social media content), neither of which is available on the Mini 3 Pro. If slow-motion footage or vertical video is important to your workflow, the Mini 4 Pro has the edge.

Obstacle Avoidance

This is the most significant difference between the two models:

  • Mini 3 Pro — tri-directional obstacle avoidance (forward, backward, downward). No upward or side sensing.
  • Mini 4 Pro — omnidirectional obstacle avoidance (forward, backward, left, right, upward, downward). Full 360° sensing.

For flying in complex environments — forests, urban areas, indoors — the Mini 4 Pro's omnidirectional sensing is a meaningful safety advantage. The Mini 3 Pro's tri-directional system is adequate for open environments.

Flight Time

  • Mini 3 Pro — up to 34 minutes (standard battery) / 51 minutes (Intelligent Flight Battery Plus)
  • Mini 4 Pro — up to 34 minutes (standard battery) / 45 minutes (Intelligent Flight Battery Plus)

The Mini 3 Pro has a slight edge in maximum flight time with the Plus battery.

Remote Controller Compatibility

Both drones are compatible with the DJI RC-N1, DJI RC, and DJI RC 2 controllers. The Mini 4 Pro is also compatible with the DJI RC 2 with its improved screen brightness, making it the better choice for bright outdoor conditions.

Repair Considerations

If you are choosing between repairing a Mini 3 Pro or upgrading to a Mini 4 Pro, consider:

Which Should You Buy?

  • Choose the Mini 4 Pro if you fly in complex environments, want omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, or need vertical video and 4K/100fps slow motion
  • Choose the Mini 3 Pro if budget is a priority and you fly mainly in open environments where tri-directional sensing is sufficient
  • Repair your existing Mini 3 Pro if the damage is limited to arm hinges, vision sensors, or the gimbal — repair cost is typically well under the price of upgrading
