EVO Lite Series Gimbal Vibration Absorbing Board Replacement

The EVO Lite and EVO Lite+ use a gimbal vibration absorbing board (also called a damping board) to isolate the camera from motor and airframe vibrations. When this board degrades or is damaged, vibrations pass directly to the camera, causing the "jello effect" — a wavy, rolling distortion in video footage. Replacing the damping board restores smooth, stable video.

Symptoms of a Worn or Damaged Damping Board

  • Jello effect (wavy distortion) in video footage
  • Footage vibrates or shakes even in calm conditions
  • Gimbal appears stable but footage is still shaky
  • Visible cracks or deformation on the damping board
  • Damping balls (rubber isolators) missing or hardened

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery.

Step 2 — Remove the gimbal protector. Slide off the rubber gimbal guard.

Step 3 — Remove the front shell. Unscrew the underside screws and carefully separate the front shell.

Step 4 — Locate the vibration absorbing board. The damping board sits between the gimbal assembly and the drone body, typically held in place by 4 rubber damping balls at the corners.

Step 5 — Disconnect the gimbal cables. Disconnect the flex cables connecting the gimbal to the main board before removing the damping board.

Step 6 — Remove the old damping board. Carefully pull the rubber damping balls out of their sockets and lift the board out. Inspect the damping balls — if they are hardened, cracked, or missing, they should be replaced along with the board.

Step 7 — Install the new damping board. Press the rubber damping balls into the sockets on the new board. Seat the board in the drone body, ensuring all four damping balls are fully engaged.

Step 8 — Reconnect the gimbal cables. Reconnect all flex cables and lock the ZIF connector tabs.

Step 9 — Reassemble and test. Reattach the front shell. Power on and record test footage. The jello effect should be eliminated or significantly reduced.

Tips

  • If the jello effect persists after board replacement, check propeller balance — unbalanced propellers cause vibrations that even a new damping board cannot fully absorb
  • Inspect the damping balls every 50 flight hours — rubber degrades over time and should be replaced proactively
  • Avoid flying in very cold conditions without warming up the drone — cold rubber damping balls become stiff and less effective
