How to Choose the Right Replacement Gimbal Motor for Your Drone

Gimbal motors are model-specific and axis-specific. Ordering the wrong motor is one of the most common mistakes in drone repair. This guide explains how to identify exactly which motor you need before purchasing.

Step 1 — Identify Your Drone Model

Gimbal motors are not interchangeable between drone models, even within the same brand family. A Mavic 3 gimbal motor will not fit a Mavic 3 Pro, and a Mini 3 Pro motor will not fit a Mini 4 Pro. Always confirm your exact model before ordering.

Check your drone model on the label on the battery compartment or the bottom shell. If the label is damaged, you can find the model in the flight app under Settings → About.

Step 2 — Identify the Failed Axis

A 3-axis gimbal has three motors, each controlling a different axis of movement:

• Yaw (Y-axis) — controls left/right pan rotation. The largest motor, located at the base of the gimbal where it connects to the drone body
• Pitch (P-axis) — controls up/down tilt. The middle motor, connecting the gimbal arm to the camera frame
• Roll (R-axis) — controls horizon leveling. The smallest motor, connecting the camera frame to the camera module

To identify the failed axis, power on the drone and observe which axis is unstable, unresponsive, or showing an overload error. The app error message often specifies the axis (e.g., "Gimbal Pitch Motor Overloaded").

Step 4 — Verify with a Diagnostic Test Board

Before ordering a replacement motor, use a gimbal cable test board to confirm the motor is the issue and not the signal cable. A faulty cable can produce the same symptoms as a failed motor.

When to Replace the Full Gimbal Assembly Instead

For some models (particularly the Mini series), individual gimbal motors are not sold separately — the entire gimbal camera assembly is replaced as a unit. This is also the recommended approach when multiple motors have failed simultaneously or when the gimbal frame itself is physically damaged.
