How to Fix EVO Max 4T Gimbal Motor

The EVO Max 4T is a high-end enterprise drone with a multi-sensor payload including thermal, wide, and zoom cameras on a precision 3-axis gimbal. Its gimbal motors are heavy-duty brushless units designed for demanding field operations. When a motor fails, the gimbal loses stabilization on one axis, resulting in unstable footage or complete gimbal failure.

Symptoms of a Failed Gimbal Motor

  • Gimbal drifts or shakes on one axis
  • Gimbal motor overload error in the Autel Enterprise app
  • One axis of the gimbal unresponsive
  • Gimbal drops to one side on power-on
  • Grinding or clicking noise from the gimbal

Tools You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver (PH000)
  • Hex key (1.5mm)
  • Plastic pry tool
  • Tweezers
  • Replacement motor for your specific axis and model variant
  • Gimbal motor diagnostic test board (SKU00146) — recommended for verification

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 — Power off and remove the battery
Fully power off and remove the battery. Wait 30 seconds before opening any components.

Step 2 — Detach the payload
Release the payload locking mechanism and detach the gimbal payload from the drone body. Place on a clean, padded surface.

Step 3 — Identify the failed motor
Inspect each axis visually. The failed motor may show physical damage, or you can use the gimbal motor diagnostic test board (SKU00146) to confirm which motor has failed electrically.

Step 4 — Disconnect the motor signal cable
Each motor has a dedicated signal cable. Lift the ZIF connector tab and slide the cable out carefully.

Step 5 — Remove the failed motor
Unscrew the motor mounting screws. Lift the motor out of its bracket. For the Yaw axis, you may need to remove the full yaw bracket assembly (SKU00143) if the bracket itself is damaged.

Step 6 — Install the replacement motor
Seat the new motor into the bracket. Align the mounting holes and secure with screws. Do not overtighten.

Step 7 — Reconnect the signal cable
Route the cable along the original path and insert into the ZIF connector. Lock the tab firmly.

Step 8 — Verify with test board (recommended)
Before full reassembly, use the diagnostic test board to confirm the new motor responds correctly to control signals.

Step 9 — Reassemble and calibrate
Reattach the payload to the drone. Power on and run gimbal calibration before flying.

EVO Max 4T vs 4T XE — Motor Compatibility

Some motors are shared between the 4T and 4T XE, while others are model-specific. The SKU00139 universal yaw motor fits both 4T, 4N, and 4T XE. The SKU00140/SKU00141 dedicated motors are specific to the 4T XE. Always confirm your exact model before ordering.
