Most consumer drones are not rated for rain or wet conditions. Flying in light rain or high humidity without protection risks short-circuiting the ESC board, main board, or camera module — damage that is often not covered by warranty. Understanding IP Ratings for Drones

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well a device resists dust and water. For drones:

  • IP43 — protected against spraying water at up to 60° angle (light rain)
  • IP45 — protected against water jets from any direction
  • IP54 — dust protected, splash resistant
  • IP55/IP56 — dust protected, water jet resistant

Enterprise drones like the Matrice 300 RTK and Matrice 350 RTK carry IP45 ratings, making them suitable for light rain operations. Most consumer drones (Mavic 3, Air 3, Mini 4 Pro) have no official IP rating and should not be flown in rain without additional protection.

Practical Rain Flying Tips

  • Check the weather forecast — avoid flying if rain is expected to intensify
  • Fly with the wind at your back to reduce water ingress into vents
  • Keep flights short in wet conditions — moisture accumulates over time
  • Land immediately if you see condensation on the camera lens
  • Never fly in thunderstorms — lightning risk is real and regulations in most countries prohibit it

What to Do If Your Drone Gets Wet

Step 1 — Power off immediately. Do not attempt to power on a wet drone. Water and electricity cause short circuits.

Step 2 — Remove the battery. Disconnect the battery as quickly as possible to cut power to all circuits.

Step 3 — Open the drone body. Remove the shell to allow air circulation to internal components.

Step 4 — Dry with isopropyl alcohol. Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush to displace water from circuit boards. IPA evaporates quickly and does not leave conductive residue.

Step 5 — Dry in a warm environment. Place the open drone in a warm (not hot) environment for 24–48 hours. A desiccant bag or silica gel packet helps absorb remaining moisture.

Step 6 — Inspect before powering on. Check all boards for corrosion (green or white residue). Corroded boards should be replaced before powering on.
