Matrice 300 RTK Arm Motor Replacement Guide

The Matrice 300 RTK is a flagship enterprise drone used in surveying, inspection, and public safety operations. Its six brushless arm motors (three CW and three CCW) are high-torque units designed for heavy payload operations. A failed arm motor causes flight instability, motor error codes, or complete inability to take off.

Symptoms of a Failed Arm Motor

  • Motor error code in the app (e.g., Motor 1–6 error)
  • Drone tilts or drifts on takeoff
  • One motor does not spin on startup
  • Unusual vibration or noise from one arm
  • Drone fails to achieve stable hover

CW vs CCW Motors

The Matrice 300 RTK uses both clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) motors. Before ordering, identify which motor position has failed and whether it requires a CW or CCW unit. The motor rotation direction is typically marked on the motor bell or in the aircraft manual.

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 — Power off and remove all batteries
The Matrice 300 RTK uses dual batteries. Remove both before starting. Wait 60 seconds for capacitors to discharge.

Step 2 — Remove the propeller
Unscrew the propeller from the failed motor. Keep the propeller and its screws together for reinstallation.

Step 3 — Access the motor mount
The motor is mounted at the end of the arm. Remove the arm cover if present to access the motor cable connector inside the arm.

Step 4 — Disconnect the motor cable
The motor connects to the ESC via a 3-wire phase cable inside the arm. Disconnect the cable connector carefully.

Step 5 — Remove the motor mounting screws
The motor is secured to the arm with 4 screws (typically M2.5). Remove these and lift the motor off the mount.

Step 6 — Install the replacement motor
Place the new motor on the mount. Apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlocker to the mounting screws before tightening. This prevents vibration from loosening the screws in flight.

Step 7 — Reconnect the motor cable
Connect the 3-phase cable. Note: if the motor spins in the wrong direction after testing, swap any two of the three phase wires.

Step 8 — Reinstall the propeller
Reattach the propeller and tighten the screws securely. Confirm the correct propeller (CW or CCW) is matched to the motor.

Step 9 — Test on the ground first
Power on and run motor diagnostics in the app. Spin each motor individually to confirm correct direction and smooth operation before flying.

Safety Notes for Enterprise UAV Repair

  • Always use threadlocker on motor mounting screws — vibration can loosen screws mid-flight
  • Confirm motor rotation direction before flying — a reversed motor will cause immediate crash on takeoff
  • After motor replacement, perform a compass calibration and IMU calibration before the first flight
